Hot Tub Maintenance – What Hot Tub Chemicals Should I Use?

hot tub is a long-term investment in your health and overall wellness. And protecting that investment comes down to one thing: proper hot tub maintenance.

One of the best ways to ensure your spa serves you well over the years is by maintaining proper water chemistry. This is done by balancing the chemical properties of your hot tub water and keeping your sanitization system in good working order.

Proper maintenance starts with having the right hot tub chemicals on hand, including bromine tablets, a pH balancer, a demineralizer, a spa shock, and a water clarifier.

A water softener and a defoamer can also be helpful.

It may sound complicated, but by following our step-by-step list, you will be an expert in hot tub maintenance in no time.

Hot Tub Maintenance – 7 Steps You Should Have In Mind

  1. Preparing your hot tub for chemicals starts with having your hot tub water at the right temperature. Once the water is at 80°F, any chemicals that you add will dissolve thoroughly, enhancing their effectiveness.
  2. Test the pH of your water using special test strips that will change color based on the acidity or alkalinity of your water. Both affordable and accurate, test strips will help you to achieve the right balance for your hot tub water.
  3. The ideal pH range falls between 7.2 and 7.8. You can adjust levels by adding a capful of pH up if your water tests low or pH down if it tests high. Always allow the water to filter for half an hour before retesting pH levels.
  4. The next test is for alkalinity. Ideally, your water should test at between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm). Once you have determined your water level using a test strip, use alkalinity up product to increase levels or an alkalinity-down product to decrease levels.
  5. Next, add a stain and scale control product and a water clarifier to your spa, following the instructions on the products. These chemicals not only help to keep the water clean, but cut down on scum caused by detergents, lotions and cosmetics.
  6. Last, but certainly not least, comes the procedure for sanitizing your water. Use either bromine or chlorine, depending on your spa’s requirements. Instructions will differ based on the sanitizer chosen — simply follow the instructions listed on the product for optimal results.
  7. Bromine or chlorine should always be followed by a spa shock product to help keep your water clear of foam and cloudiness.

Weekly Chemical Hot Tub Maintenance

  1. Test the water for bromine, pH and alkalinity and adjust levels as necessary.
  2. Add a capful each of a scale control product and a water clarifier.

Pro Tip: If you purchased an ozonator for your hot tub, you will not need to use as much bromine or chlorine for an ideal test.
Sanitizers such as water clarifier can also be used more sparingly.
